Starting Off on the Wrong Foot

Weight- 212
Exercise- 20 minute Biggest Loser cardio
Calories-270 and it's only 6 am
Total Calories for the day-1590

I love Mountain Dew. Adore it even. I "quit" drinking it 5 months ago. I put the quit in quotations because I have done anything but. Oh, I have definitely slowed down my intake. But if i have a rough morning I grab one. If I go to the movies I get one. If I get pulled over and am late to work(like I was this morning) I say that I deserve it, I've had a rough time. And my mind might deserve that little pick me up. My body doesn't. I am sitting here with an empty Dew bottle in front of me and realize that I just used 270 calories to drink sugar. It did make me feel better, that sweet nectar of the Gods running down my throat, but I am going to be mad at myself tonight when I make myself do an extra 20 minutes of cardio for drinking it.

Last night my friend Marie and I were trying to exercise and it seemed that fate was telling us we were just supposed to crash on the couches, watch tv, and pig out. I got the Biggest Loser workout in the mail yesterday so we were going to try it. It is nice to do something different sometimes. But the remote control for her DVD player stopped working. Because of the way the DVD is set up, we couldn't just hit play either because all we could watch were the interviews. She had a universal remote so we looked up the codes for her DVD player and tried to get the codes to work on it, but her remote would only accept three digits, and some of the codes had 4 digits. We never did get it to work.

So then we decided to go with a goodie but oldie. We love the Susan Powter Move it or Lose it tape so we decided to get out the steppers and go that route. The tape wouldn't play in the VCR. It just kept showing a bunch of static, and then it would show the intro like it was going to play but it was just a tease. At this point I would have given up, but I have to admire her tenacity. Her mom used to be an aerobics instructor so marie had an old audiotape made in the seventies that she knew all the exercise moves too. So we decided to go a little old school and do the cassette tape route. Her machine ate the tape! She did wind it back up and eventually we got to do the exercise, but it took up more time trying to find a way to exercise than we actually got to spend exercising!

But let me tell you, you have never truly exercised until you have done the country hop or cooled down to Olivia Newton John singing Hopelessly Devoted to You.

LOL! That was great! You got pulled over? That sucks! Did you get a ticket?

Yeah, I did the same thing yesterday when I was having a bad day, but with a Snickers bar. Did you listen to the cassette tape of Susan?

Not to make you feel worse, but I just got this email from "Real Age" and guess what the topic was? I'm pissed about number 4!

•Liquid Dieting
About half of the excess calories we consume come from liquids. Trying to cut back? These are your five best to worst choices.

1) Water -- it hydrates better than anything; 2) unsweetened tea or coffee; 3) nonfat/low-fat soymilk or cow's milk -- they're fairly low-cal and provide some great nutrients; 4) no-cal beverages (think Crystal Light), then nutritionally rich juices (like orange juice -- but stick to one a day); 5) The worst? The usual suspects -- sugary drinks (sodas, punches) with no nutritional value. What about slushies, smoothies, and shakes? Consider them a meal.
RealAge Benefit: Maintaining your weight and body mass index at a desirable level can make your RealAge as much as 6 years younger.

On average, Americans consume 150 to 300 more calories per day than they did 20 years ago, with half coming from sugary beverages. So if you're trying to count calories and slim down, be mindful of what you drink.

The big problem with sweet liquids is that they don't fill you up the way solid food does. You can drink a couple cans of sweetened soda, to the tune of 150 calories a pop, but they won't curb your appetite. You'll be hungry for your next meal and probably won't eat less to compensate for the 300 extra cola calories you downed. And if the sodas were sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) -- the latest bad boy on nutrition labels -- not only will they fail to fill you up, but also they'll make you hungrier than you were before.

Drinks made with sugar substitutes aren't a magical elixir, either. According to research, those beverages also may increase your appetite, particularly for sweet things, leading you to overeat later.

H20, on the other hand, may actually do the opposite -- a glass before meals can help keep you from overeating. So grab yourself a tall drink of water.
